(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia Fire Department Responds to Commercial Structure Fire on North Eighth Street

On Thursday, Jan. 15, at 2:43 p.m., the Columbia Fire Department (CFD) received a call about a commercial structure fire in the 30 block of North Eighth Street. According to reports, CFD units arrived at the scene within two minutes.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered an active appliance fire in the basement of the building. Acting swiftly, they were able to extinguish the flames within five minutes and contain the damage to the area of origin. However, smoke from the fire had spread throughout the basement and into an adjacent business, prompting firefighters to ventilate both structures to ensure safety from high levels of carbon monoxide.

Fortunately, there were no injuries reported as a result of this incident. A total of 10 CFD units with 21 personnel responded to the call and worked diligently to control and extinguish the fire.

After conducting an investigation, Columbia Fire Marshals have determined that the cause of the fire was accidental and originated from a clothes dryer. In light of this incident, CFD would like to remind residents about the importance of having working smoke alarms in their homes. They should be placed on every level of your home and outside sleeping areas. It is also crucial to check smoke alarms monthly by pressing the test button and change batteries at least twice a year when adjusting clocks for Daylight Saving Time. Smoke alarms over 10 years old should be replaced.

The quick response and efficient actions taken by CFD prevented any major damage or injuries in this incident. The department urges all residents to take necessary precautions and follow safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
