Colorado Springs Airport secures $7.5 million federal grant for terminal modernization
Rezul News/10737611
~ Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is set to receive a significant boost in funding as part of the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Terminal Program (ATP). The airport will be receiving $7.5 million through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which aims to provide $5 billion over five years to support the modernization of aging terminal infrastructure at airports across the country.
This latest grant brings the total amount of ATP funding awarded to COS to $27.5 million. The funds will be used to support the airport's ElevateCOS terminal modernization project, a multi-year effort that aims to upgrade various aspects of the terminal. These upgrades include enlarging hold rooms, improving restrooms and public corridors, replacing outdated systems with energy-efficient infrastructure, enhancing accessibility beyond ADA standards, and creating more family-friendly spaces for passengers.

The project is being funded through a combination of airport cash, federal and state grants, and passenger facility charges. It is worth noting that no local tax dollars are being used for these improvements.
According to Alex Kovacs, director of aviation for Colorado Springs Airport, this investment will have a significant impact on both the airport and the communities it serves. He stated that "Airport Terminal Program funding has allowed Colorado Springs Airport to modernize key terminal facilities, increase efficiency and passenger capacity, and incorporate sustainability and accessibility improvements." Kovacs also added that these upgrades will strengthen COS' operational resilience, improve passenger flow, and enhance the overall customer experience as the airport continues to grow.
The ElevateCOS project is expected to bring lasting benefits not only for travelers but also for airlines and the Pikes Peak region as a whole. With this latest round of funding, COS is well on its way towards becoming a more modern and efficient airport for all its stakeholders.
