WASHINGTON, D.C. ~ In preparation for a meeting between Western governors and federal officials on the Colorado River, Governor Jared Polis of Colorado has released a statement outlining his commitment to reaching an agreement that reflects the current state of water supplies and shares responsibility among all seven Basin states. Governor Polis emphasized the importance of the river in sustaining communities, Tribal nations, agriculture, and critical hydropower infrastructure across the West. He stressed that protecting Lake Powell and Lake Mead is not just a regional concern, but a shared obligation that is essential to maintaining stability within the entire system.

Colorado has already made significant investments in conservation and efficiency while also honoring existing water rights and interstate compacts. The governor stated that they are prepared to continue this work in order to reach a sustainable agreement that is supply-based, enforceable, and equitable for all parties involved.
