City of Tacoma Expands Garbage Can Program in Response to Community Feedback

Rezul News/10727831
~ Tacoma, WA- The City of Tacoma has announced plans to expand its Tidy-Up Tacoma program in an effort to improve cleanliness and reduce litter and illegal dumping. The program, which is run by the City's Environmental Services Department, will be adding 120 new public garbage cans across the city, bringing the total number of City-maintained cans to 360.

According to Solid Waste Division Manager Lewis Griffith, this expansion is a direct response to feedback from residents and businesses who expressed a desire for cleaner public spaces. The new cans will be strategically placed in neighborhood business districts and other dense commercial areas based on data from litter hotspots, Tacoma FIRST 311 service requests, foot-traffic patterns, and equity considerations.

In addition to the new cans, the program will also include two full-time Solid Waste workers dedicated to installation, maintenance, repair, and graffiti removal. This proactive approach aims to ensure consistent upkeep of the garbage cans.

Community members can play a role in this effort by making requests for new public garbage can locations or reporting maintenance needs through Tacoma FIRST 311. The project is fully funded through the City's existing Solid Waste Excise Tax as approved in its 2023-2024 Biennial Budget. No new rates or fees will be associated with this expansion.
