City of Spokane Staff on Hand at Disaster Assistance Center

~ Spokane, WA- The Disaster Assistance Center (DAC) at Shadle Park High School has become a hub for fire-impacted residents seeking help in navigating the road to recovery. Multiple City of Spokane departments have come together to provide assistance and resources to those affected by the recent fires.

Erin Hut, Communications Director for the City of Spokane, stated that representatives from Planning and Development Services, Housing and Human Services, and Spokane 311 are available at the DAC to connect survivors with information and support as they begin the rebuilding process.

The Planning and Development Services team is offering guidance on site cleanup, debris removal, and demolition permits. They are also collecting contact information from impacted residents in order to streamline communication as more information becomes available. Additionally, they are working with the County Assessor's office to provide relief on property taxes for those affected by the fires. The team is also collaborating with the Department of Labor & Industries to ensure that impacted individuals and families are aware of how to properly vet contractors for their rebuilding needs.

Housing and Human Services staff are also present at the DAC to assist eligible residents in finding affordable housing options in Spokane. Residents can fill out a form which will be used by City staff to coordinate with affordable housing providers and connect them directly with available units. HHS staff can also provide guidance on accessing public benefits, food assistance, transportation services, and educational support.

For those seeking assistance with City services such as water, sewer, garbage collection, recycling or organic waste collection, Spokane 311 operators are available at the DAC. They can help residents navigate these services during this difficult time.

In addition to these services, Spokane Parks and Recreation has opened up showers at Shadle Aquatic Center for community members starting Friday afternoon. These showers will be available throughout the weekend during the same operating hours as the DAC.

City staff will continue working alongside regional, state, and federal partners to support the community throughout the recovery process. The DAC will remain open to provide assistance and resources to fire-impacted residents as they begin the long road to recovery.
