City of Long Beach Advises Electrical Vehicle Users About Potential Hazards from Saltwater Exposure

Rezul News/10747960
Long Beach, CA ~ Long Beach officials are advising electric vehicle users to take precautions as the city prepares for wet weather and a forecast El Niño season, warning that saltwater exposure can create a fire or explosion risk.

The city said most electric vehicles, including cars, buses, e-bikes and scooters, use lithium-ion batteries. Saltwater can form conductive bridges inside a battery pack, potentially causing it to heat up, according to the city.

Owners in areas prone to coastal flooding should move vehicles away from potential exposure before a storm, officials said. They also advised against driving any type of electric vehicle through flooded saltwater.

If a vehicle has been partly submerged or floodwater may have reached its battery or electrical components, the city said not to drive, charge or operate it, even if it appears to work normally. If it was connected to a charger during exposure, users should disconnect it.

The city urged people to watch for signs of battery damage, including hissing or popping, bubbling or gurgling sounds, unusual odors, heat or smoke. If any occur, people should move away and call 911, officials said, adding that they should not try to move the vehicle or put out a fire themselves.

The city recommends arranging professional towing and telling the provider about suspected saltwater exposure. The vehicle should be moved away from a garage, residence or other flammable structure, it said. Anyone calling 911 should report the suspected exposure.

During Tropical Storm Rachel, the city encouraged residents to check its Emergency page for updates on response efforts and sign up for Alert Long Beach text and email notifications.
