City of Columbia winter weather update, Jan. 26, 8:30 a.m.
Rezul News/10725961
(COLUMBIA, MO) ~ Columbia, MO - The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a cold weather advisory in effect until noon today. Residents are advised to take precautions as very cold wind chills as low as 21 below are expected.
As winter weather can be unpredictable, the NWS is urging residents to closely monitor the forecast and changing road conditions throughout the mid-Missouri area. Updates will be posted on the City's various social media accounts and on the City's website.
The City of Columbia Public Works department has activated a 22-person snowplow crew at 7 a.m. this morning, with additional crew members from other City departments being added throughout the day. The focus for today will be on plowing residential neighborhood streets, starting in outlying areas and progressing towards the city center. This approach alternates from one winter weather event to the next.
To keep residents informed about snow clearing progress, the Snow Clearing Progress Viewer at CoMoSnow.com has been activated. This interactive map shows which sections of Columbia have been plowed, where plows are currently operating, and which areas have not yet been plowed.
For those who must travel, drivers are advised to keep speeds low, especially on unplowed neighborhood streets. Tailgating should be avoided and extra distance should be allowed for stopping.

Go COMO Transit is also making adjustments due to winter weather conditions. Paratransit service will not operate today due to safety concerns on residential streets that have not yet been plowed. Fixed-route bus service is expected to operate normally with possible delays, while Tiger Line service is also expected to run as usual.
Riders are encouraged to use the ETA SPOT app for service messages and real-time bus tracking, as well as signing up for text alerts regarding service impacts at Alerts.CoMo.gov.
The frigid temperatures in the forecast have also affected Solid Waste services. Recycling collection for today has been canceled and customers are asked to hold onto their materials until their next scheduled collection. All other collections are expected to remain on schedule, starting with Tuesday, Jan. 27.
To ensure efficient trash collection and snow removal, residents are reminded to follow guidelines for roll cart placement. Collection crews are also responding to missed collections and residents can report any issues by calling the Contact Center at 573.874.CITY (2489) or online.
The City's Sustainability department is reminding residents to be "salt smart" this winter. Shoveling should be done before using salt, which should only be applied when temperatures are above 15 degrees Fahrenheit and sparingly on cleared surfaces. Excess salt should be swept up to protect local waterways, and pet owners should rinse their pets' paws after walks as some de-icers can irritate them.

Residents are also reminded of the City ordinance requiring property owners or occupants to keep sidewalks in front of or adjacent to their property free from snow and ice for the safety and accessibility of all.
In terms of public health, several warming centers and shelters will remain open regardless of weather conditions. However, it is recommended to check with the location before going due to changing conditions. Animal Control will only respond to extreme emergencies during this weather event, such as a vicious dog running loose or a gravely injured animal. Residents are advised to bring their pets inside during extreme weather.
The Columbia Police Department has implemented a delayed accident reporting protocol due to hazardous traveling conditions. They will only respond to crashes involving serious injuries or criminal elements during this time. Non-emergency accidents can be reported by calling 311 or online.
As hazardous weather continues, the Columbia Police Department is urging drivers to slow down, increase distance between cars, accelerate and decelerate slowly, wear seatbelts, and take all other precautions necessary for safety. All vehicles involved in delayed crash reports will be marked with crime scene tape and towed when weather conditions improve.
Residents are reminded to stay informed and take necessary precautions during this cold weather advisory.
