City of Bloomington to Begin West 2nd Street Modernization and Safety Improvement Project in June
Rezul News/10736478
~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington has announced that construction will begin in the first week of June on the highly anticipated West 2nd Street Modernization and Safety Improvement Project. With a budget of $6.3 million, this project aims to enhance the safety and accessibility of West 2nd Street between the B-Line Trail and Walker Street.
The project includes various improvements such as the installation of a two-way protected bicycle lane between the B-Line Trail and the 2nd/Bloomfield multi-use path at Walker Street. This will provide a safer route for cyclists and promote alternative modes of transportation. Additionally, traffic signals at 2nd Street and Walker Street, as well as at 2nd Street and Rogers Street, will be replaced to improve traffic flow.
In order to address aging infrastructure, new storm sewer systems will be installed along the corridor. The roadway will also be resurfaced to ensure smoother travel for all modes of transportation. Furthermore, four locations will have accessible level boarding bus stops, making it easier for individuals with mobility devices to use public transit.

The project aligns with several adopted plans and ongoing community investments in the area. It supports the goals and recommendations outlined in Bloomington's 2019 Transportation Plan and complements planned improvements at Building Trades Park and the Building Trades Park Master Plan. In addition, upgrades to bus stops have been coordinated with Bloomington Transit to support their Transform BT Strategic Plan.
However, residents should expect some disruptions during construction including temporary lane restrictions, detours, and short-term closures on the B-Line Trail. The first closure is expected to last one day in early June, followed by additional five-day closures in late July and mid-September. These dates are subject to change due to weather conditions or other operational factors.
Starting in August, a one-way maintenance-of-traffic pattern will be implemented on West 2nd Street. Eastbound traffic between Walker Street and Morton Street will be detoured to 1st Street while westbound traffic will remain open on 2nd Street. The intersection of 2nd Street and Rogers Street will also be fully closed for up to seven days, with the exact date to be announced.
The City has assured that this project will be carefully coordinated with other ongoing projects in Bloomington. However, residents are advised to plan for potential detours and delays and to remain vigilant while traveling in the area. The West 2nd Street Modernization and Safety Improvement Project is expected to greatly benefit the community by improving safety, accessibility, and overall infrastructure in the area.
