Call 311 for Non-Emergency Help in City of Spokane Limits

Rezul News/10749429
~ The City of Spokane's new non-emergency call system went live Oct. 27, directing people within city limits to dial 3-1-1 for assistance, the city said.

The change moves calls previously handled by Crime Check to the city's existing 311 line. Residents can use it to report suspicious activity, crimes no longer in progress and other incidents that do not require an immediate emergency response.

The 311 line also connects callers with city services, including utility billing information, pothole reporting, outreach services and Parks and Recreation programs. Callers outside Spokane city limits, or those unable to reach the service using the short number, can call 509-755-2489.

The city said residents should continue to call 9-1-1 for emergencies requiring an immediate police, fire or medical response.

The transition is part of Spokane's broader effort to develop its own emergency communications system, called the Spokane United 911 Network, or SUN 911.

"This is an important step in making it easier for people to connect with the City of Spokane," Mayor Lisa Brown said in the city's announcement. She said integrating non-emergency police and fire calls into 311 would provide a more direct way for residents to seek help and information while reserving 911 for emergencies.
