California: Governor Newsom proclaims Transgender Day of Remembrance
Rezul News/10720979
~ Sacramento, CA - Governor Gavin Newsom has declared November 20, 2025 as "Transgender Day of Remembrance" in California. This proclamation comes as a way to honor and remember the lives lost due to bigotry and violence against transgender individuals.
In a statement released by the Governor's office, Newsom reaffirmed his commitment to fighting for the safety and equality of the LGBTQ community. He also acknowledged the harsh reality that transgender and non-gender-conforming people face daily, with escalating hate and violence.
The Governor called out the federal administration for denying the existence of trans people and cutting vital resources such as suicide hotlines and mental health support. He also expressed concern over the increase in anti-LGBTQ legislation across the nation and rising hate crimes.
However, Newsom made it clear that California will not tolerate hate and will continue to defend the freedom, equality, and dignity of all people. The state has taken action to create safe environments in schools and communities, support anti-hate programs, ensure access to healthcare, and promote health equity.
On this day of remembrance, Newsom urged everyone to remember those who are no longer with us and honor their memories by taking action. He emphasized that hate will not have the final say and called for a world that not only tolerates but celebrates transgender individuals.

The proclamation was signed by Governor Newsom on November 19th with a witness from Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber. It declares November 20th as "Transgender Day of Remembrance" in California.
For those in need of help or support, there are resources available such as calling or texting 988 at any time to be connected with trained crisis counselors. The Trevor Project also offers specialized services for LGBTQ youth through their hotline (1-866-488-7386), text line (START to 678678), or chat at TheTrevorProject.org/GetHelp. Non-crisis peer and family support can also be found through CalHOPE.
In July, California announced a partnership with The Trevor Project to provide enhanced competency training for crisis counselors, ensuring better attunement to the needs of LGBTQ youth. In October, Governor Newsom signed AB 727, which requires student ID cards in public middle schools, high schools, and colleges to include the phone number for The Trevor Project.
This proclamation comes on the heels of other recent news from Governor Newsom's office, including the announcement of the next round of film and TV tax credits and the return of hit series Baywatch to California. The state is also investing nearly $150 million to improve access to healthcare for all Californians.
As California continues to lead with its values of respect, equality, and acceptance, let us remember those who have been lost and work towards a world where everyone is safe and welcomed in our communities.
