California: Governor Newsom proclaims Veterans Day
Rezul News/10719871
~ Sacramento, CA - On November 11, 2025, Governor Gavin Newsom issued a proclamation declaring the day as "Veterans Day" in honor of those who have served in the U.S. military. The proclamation was made to recognize and thank veterans for their sacrifices and dedication to protecting the freedoms and way of life of Americans.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom highlighted the significance of this year's Veterans Day as it marks the 250th anniversary of the Army, Navy, and Marines. These three branches have played a crucial role in the founding and defense of the United States.
California is home to approximately 1.5 million veterans who are an integral part of the state's diverse population. They are our family, friends, and neighbors who contribute to every sector of our economy. Many continue to serve their communities even after leaving the military.
In recognition of their service, California has made it a priority to support veterans through various initiatives. One significant policy change is a new law that allows veterans to exclude up to $20,000 of their military retirement income from state income tax. In addition, Proposition 1 was approved by voters in 2024, setting aside $1 billion for housing veterans with mental and behavioral health needs through the Homekey+ program.

Governor Newsom also emphasized California's commitment to ensuring that veterans can find permanent housing in the state through programs like the Veterans Home Loans program. This program has helped 433 veterans and their families purchase homes in the last fiscal year alone.
Furthermore, California is dedicated to supporting veteran mental health and suicide prevention through initiatives like the $50 million California Veterans Health Initiative. This program provides easier access to mental health services for all veterans regardless of when or how they served.
Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder that California is committed to supporting its veterans not just on Veterans Day but every day. The governor has also taken multiple clemency actions, granting 16 pardons today and a total of 263 pardons, 160 commutations, and 42 reprieves during his time in office.
In other news, Governor Newsom is fighting for Californians' access to food benefits while the Trump administration has requested an emergency stay to avoid fully funding SNAP food benefits. The governor is also working with the City of Fresno to address unsheltered homelessness on state right-of-ways within the city limits.
As California continues to prioritize and support its veterans, Governor Newsom's proclamation serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served in the U.S. military. The state will continue to honor and support its veterans in every way possible.
