California: Governor Newsom proclaims state of emergency in Orange County in response to ongoing chemical incident in Garden Grove, makes additional shelter sites available

~ SACRAMENTO - In response to an ongoing chemical incident at an aerospace facility in Garden Grove, Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in Orange County. The hazardous materials incident has resulted in the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents from the surrounding area.

The proclamation issued by Governor Newsom directs the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) and all state government agencies to support Orange County and impacted local jurisdictions in addressing the emergency. This includes unlocking additional emergency response resources and authorities, such as making state-owned properties and fairgrounds available as shelter for evacuated residents.

The safety of Orange County residents is the top priority for Governor Newsom, who stated, "We are mobilizing every state resource available to support local responders and make sure the community has what they need to stay safe."

Director of Cal OES Caroline Thomas Jacobs also emphasized the agency's commitment to a unified response, saying, "Our role is to coordinate resources, share critical information, and ensure local responders have all the necessary resources to safely respond to this dynamic situation."

In other news, Governor Newsom announced several appointments on May 22nd including Danny Yost as Deputy Secretary of Legislation for the California State Transportation Agency. Yost previously served as Assistant Deputy Director of Sacramento.

As wildfires continue to ravage parts of Southern California, more than 2,800 personnel and equipment have been deployed by California in an effort to fight them. This includes firefighters, fire engines, dozers, helicopters, and support personnel.

Lastly, Governor Newsom proclaimed May 22nd as "Harvey Milk Day" in honor of the late activist and politician. In his proclamation, Governor Newsom recognized Milk as a hero for his advocacy and impact on the LGBTQ+ community.
