California: Governor Newsom proclaims Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide
Rezul News/10733541
~ On April 24, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom of California declared the day as "A Day of Remembrance of the Armenian Genocide" through a proclamation. This proclamation was issued to honor the victims and survivors of the Armenian Genocide that took place in 1915.
The Ottoman Empire, which was in power at the time, systematically targeted and killed 1.5 million Armenians, making it the first genocide of the 20th century. The genocide began with the forced deportation and murder of hundreds of Armenian intellectuals and community leaders.
In his proclamation, Governor Newsom acknowledged the strength and resilience of the Armenian people who have built new lives and thriving communities around the world. He also recognized their contributions to California, where thousands have made their homes.
However, Governor Newsom also addressed the ongoing discrimination and violence faced by the Armenian community. He stated that these acts are painful reminders of the need to learn from history and take action against hate and atrocities.
To combat these issues, California has implemented measures such as enhanced security at places of worship and other cultural centers at risk for hate crimes. They have also established anti-hate programs to promote tolerance and support victims, as well as an anonymous reporting hotline for witnesses or victims of hate acts.

This move is part of California's ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and hold perpetrators accountable.
Additionally, California is pleased to welcome back Bed, Bath & Beyond stores as the company reopens in the state. This is a testament to California's thriving economy and its appeal as a great place to do business.
Lastly, Governor Newsom and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom expressed their condolences on the passing of Michael Tilson Thomas, renowned conductor, composer, and member of the California Hall of Fame. They recognized his contributions to the arts and his impact on the state of California.
