~ Sacramento - In a proclamation issued today, Governor Gavin Newsom declared May 2026 as "Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month" in California. This proclamation recognizes the invaluable contributions of over 7.2 million Californians of Asian or Pacific Islander descent to the state and nation.

The Governor's proclamation highlights the rich and diverse heritage of AAPI communities in California, dating back to the first days of statehood. Despite facing discrimination and adversity, AAPI immigrants have played a significant role in shaping the state's history and continue to be an essential part of its fabric.

California is home to the largest AAPI population in the country, with a growth rate of over 25% from 2010 to 2020. The state takes pride in its residents from over 30 different countries and communities, who bring their unique cultures and traditions to enrich California's identity.

However, Governor Newsom also acknowledges that there is still work to be done in addressing past and present racism towards AAPI communities. He urges Californians to stand in solidarity with their AAPI friends and neighbors and fight for their safety and inclusion.
