Rezul News/10732202
~ SACRAMENTO - On April 9, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom honored fallen Tulare County Sheriff's Deputy Randy Hoppert with a statement expressing his condolences and recognizing Hoppert's sacrifice in service to his community. The governor's statement was issued following the death of Deputy Hoppert, who was fatally shot while serving an eviction notice in Porterville.
Deputy Hoppert, 35, had been with the Tulare County Sheriff's Department for nearly six years. In 2021, he received a Letter of Commendation from the department for using his training from the US Navy to save a 2-year-old girl's life. He leaves behind a wife and children.
The incident occurred when the suspect inside the residence opened fire on Deputy Hoppert and other officers and first responders on the scene. Despite being transported to Sierra View Medical Center, Deputy Hoppert succumbed to his injuries.
Governor Newsom praised Deputy Hoppert's selflessness, bravery, and commitment to protecting others as an example of honor and duty. He also stated that Deputy Hoppert's legacy will endure and his sacrifice will always be remembered.

In honor of Deputy Hoppert, flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space will be flown at half-staff.
This news comes amidst other recent developments in California. The state's economy continues to dominate as it grew by 5% in 2025, reaching a record nominal GDP of $4.25 trillion. This growth outperformed every other state in the nation and marks a 16-year streak of economic growth for California.
In addition to economic success, California is also cracking down on hospice fraud following President Trump's pardon of the man behind the biggest healthcare fraud in US history. Governor Newsom and Attorney General Bonta announced that criminal charges are being brought against those involved in this scheme.
Furthermore, Governor Newsom is expanding apprenticeships and workforce training opportunities for over 60,000 Californians with a $37.2 million investment through the California Apprenticeship Council and the California Workforce Development Board.
These developments showcase California's commitment to public safety, economic growth, and providing opportunities for its citizens. Deputy Hoppert's sacrifice serves as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of those who serve their communities.
