California: Governor Newsom announces multiple clemency actions
Rezul News/10728129
~ Governor Gavin Newsom has announced multiple clemency actions, granting 8 pardons and 6 commutations. This brings the total number of clemency actions during his time in office to 271 pardons, 166 commutations, and 43 reprieves.
The grantees were recommended for clemency by a variety of individuals, including elected officials, correctional staff, teachers, community and religious leaders, and judges. Governor Newsom takes into consideration several factors when reviewing clemency cases, including the applicant's rehabilitation since their conviction, the impact on public safety, and the effect on the community and crime victims.
A pardon acknowledges an individual's successful reintegration into society after a conviction and may remove barriers to employment and public service. It also restores civic rights and responsibilities. On the other hand, a commutation recognizes exceptional post-conviction rehabilitation and modifies sentences to make the grantee eligible for an earlier parole hearing. The Board of Parole Hearings considers various factors when determining whether an individual can safely be released into the community on parole.

The Governor's Office encourages victims, survivors, and witnesses to register with CDCR's Office of Victim and Survivor Rights and Services to receive information about an incarcerated person's status. They can also learn about victim-offender dialogues or register/update their registration confidentially by calling 1-877-256-6877 (toll-free).
Governor Newsom believes that this is the biggest reform of California's mental health system in decades. The opening of a new Learning Center at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center marks a historic milestone in transforming what was once known as the state's most notorious prison into a national model for rehabilitation and successful reentry.
In addition to this reform, Governor Newsom has also launched a new state investment and philanthropic collaboration to continue supporting families under federal assault. This includes funding for mutual aid programs and support for local partners that connect families with needed services. The Governor has also called on the Trump Administration to refund Americans their money immediately, with interest, following the Supreme Court's ruling against illegal tariffs.
As Governor Newsom continues to prioritize mental health and substance use support in the community, he urges city and county leaders to work closely with him to ensure that this critical reform sees results. With these actions, Governor Newsom is committed to creating a safer and more just California for all its residents.
