~ SACRAMENTO - Governor Gavin Newsom has made several appointments today, July 7, 2026, to key positions in the California government.
Jaci Thomson, a resident of Roseville, has been appointed as the Deputy Director of the Interagency Support Division at the California Department of General Services. Thomson brings a wealth of experience to this role, having previously served as the Special Advisor to the Directorate at the California Department of State Hospitals since 2026. She also held positions such as Deputy Director of the Patient Care Coordination Division and Principal Program Budget Analyst III at various state departments. Thomson holds a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance from the University of Iowa and is a member of the Democratic party.
Devon Keeler, from Carmichael, has been appointed as the Deputy Secretary for Communications and External Affairs at the California Department of Food and Agriculture. Keeler's previous roles include Assistant Executive Director at the Office of Community Partnerships and Strategic Partnerships in the California Governor's Office of Service and Community Engagement. She also worked as a Senior Communications Officer at the California Department of Public Health and held multiple positions at Mercury Public Affairs. Keeler holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara and is also a member of the Democratic party.

Darrell Roberts, hailing from Chula Vista, has been appointed to serve on the State Board of Fire Services. Roberts brings extensive experience in firefighting to this role, having served as President of both California Professional Firefighters and International Association of Firefighters Local 2180. He currently holds a position as Battalion Chief at City of Chula Vista Fire Department. Roberts is a member of International Association of Firefighters and identifies as a Democrat.
John Preckwinkle III, from Palm Springs, has been appointed to serve on Native American Heritage Commission. Preckwinkle previously served as Tribal Council Member for Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and was Chairman of the Cultural Preservation Committee. This position requires Senate confirmation and Preckwinkle identifies as a Republican.
In other news, Governor Newsom has launched "FireSat" wildfire-detection satellites to spot blazes from space. This initiative is part of California's ongoing efforts to combat wildfires and protect communities. The state has also awarded 41 new projects under the expanded Film & TV Tax Credit program, which is projected to bring in $6.6 billion in economic impact. Additionally, Governor Newsom has signed several bills into law, including AB 1625 which addresses board compensation at Sacramento Regional Transit District and AB 1683 which focuses on workers' compensation insurance.
