Boston: Honoring Hispanic, Turkish, and Nigerian Heritage
Rezul News/10748097
| The Council is recognizing Hispanic, Turkish, and Nigerian heritage and independence celebrations this month. This week, the Council adopted resolutions recognizing Tu Hispanidad Flag Day on October 14, the 103rd anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye on October 29, and Nigerian Independence Day on October 1. The Council will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on October 14 in the Iannella Chamber and recognize Hispanic leaders. The Tu Hispanidad Flag will also be raised for the fourth time at City Hall Plaza. The resolution notes that Hispanic Heritage observances began in the United States in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and were expanded to a 30-day period in 1988. The 2026 theme, "Unidos Somos Mas: Together, we are more," highlights the role of Hispanic communities in driving change and shaping the future through resilience, innovation, and leadership. Boston City Council and Tu Hispanidad held their first Hispanic Heritage Month gathering in the Iannella Chamber in 1994. The Council has continued the tradition of honoring Hispanic leaders, businesses, and organizations for their service to the Hispanic community, Boston, and Massachusetts. Tu Hispanidad, or "Tribus Unidas," celebrates the contributions and heritage of Hispanic natives, immigrants, and people with ancestral ties to Spain, Mexico, Africa, the Caribbean, and Central, North, and South America. The Council is also recognizing October 29, 2026, as Turkish Republic Day in Boston in celebration of the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Türkiye. Founded on October 29, 1923, by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the Republic of Türkiye is marking more than a century of progress, democracy, and cultural diversity. The Council's resolution also recognizes the 31st annual Boston Turkish Arts & Culture Festival and the contributions of the Turkish American community to Boston and the New England region. As part of the recognition, the Property Management Department will raise the flag of the Republic of Türkiye at City Hall Plaza on October 29. The Council extended its best wishes to the Turkish American Cultural Society of New England for the continued success of the festival and recognized the longstanding friendship and cooperation between the United States and Türkiye. The Council also recognized October 1, 2026, as Nigerian Independence Day, marking the 66th anniversary of Nigeria's independence from colonial rule. The resolution notes that Nigeria has made progress in areas including education, healthcare, infrastructure development, and economic growth, while Nigerians at home and abroad have contributed to the global community through achievements in professions including the arts, athletics, and entrepreneurship. Nigeria is the largest source of African immigration to the United States, and Massachusetts is among the 10 states with the highest Nigerian-born population, according to the resolution. To mark Nigerian Independence Day, the Property Management Department raised the Nigerian flag at City Hall Plaza on October 1. The Council's resolution recognizes the Nigerian community and extends its wishes for a joyful Independence Day celebration. |
