Boston: December 24, 2025 Traffic Advisory

~ Boston, MA - As the city prepares for its annual First Night celebration on New Year's Eve, attendees are being encouraged to utilize alternative modes of transportation. The event, which will take place on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, will feature various parking restrictions in order to ensure logistical and public safety needs are met.

According to officials, parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the day on several streets including Cambridge Street, Arlington Street, Atlantic Avenue, Beacon Street, Blagden Street, Boylston Street, Charles Street, Charles Street South, Court Street and Tremont Street. These restrictions will be in place on both sides of the streets and will cover various sections from Bowdoin Street to Somerset Street.

In addition to these restrictions, the Boston Police have requested a temporary parking restriction on Van Ness Street for Saturday's college football game between UConn and Army at Fenway Park. This restriction will be in effect on both sides of Van Ness Street from Jersey Street to Kilmarnock Street.

For those looking to attend the game or any other events during this time period, it is recommended to utilize alternative modes of transportation such as walking, biking or taking public transit. Information on Bluebikes, the regional bike share service can be found online along with information on the MBTA.

The MBTA is also advising riders to purchase round-trip tickets instead of one-way tickets for a faster return trip. And for those who prefer walking as a means of transportation around the city during this busy time period - it is also highly encouraged.

In other news affecting Boston residents and commuters alike - the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has announced that the Canterbury Street Bridge will be closed starting Friday September 12 at 9:00 p.m. due to findings from a recent bridge inspection. The closure is expected to last until further notice and pedestrian access will still be available.

Drivers traveling through this area should expect delays and are advised to reduce speed and use caution. The primary detour route will utilize Hyde Park Avenue, Cummins Highway, Rowe Street, Brown Avenue, and Seymour Street. Eastbound traffic will be directed to follow Seymour Street to Brown Avenue to Cummins Highway while westbound traffic will be directed to take Hyde Park Avenue to Cummins Highway to Rowe Street to Seymour Street.

As always, officials are reminding drivers to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time during this period of increased traffic and road closures.
