Boston: Council Commemorates Memorial Day

Rezul News/10736043
~ As Memorial Day approaches, the city of Boston prepares to honor and remember the brave service members who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States. The City Council has adopted a resolution, proposed by Councilors Flynn and Murphy, to commemorate this important holiday and pay tribute to those who have given their lives while serving in the U.S. military.

The resolution not only recognizes the history of Memorial Day, but also its significance in honoring fallen soldiers. It traces back to its origins after the Civil War when it was known as Decoration Day and was established as a way to honor those who died in battle. Over time, it evolved into a national holiday observed on the last Monday in May following the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968.

With more than 1.1 million American military personnel having lost their lives while serving their country, this resolution serves as a reminder that their bravery and sacrifice should never be forgotten. It also acknowledges Gold Star Families, who have endured profound loss and sacrifice as they carry forward the legacy of their loved ones.

The resolution also highlights various Memorial Day observances taking place in Boston. These include a ceremony hosted by William E. Carter American Legion Post 16, wreath-laying ceremonies at the South Boston Vietnam Veterans Memorial and Puerto Rican Veterans Memorial, and efforts led by the City's Veterans Services and local organizations to place flags at military cemeteries across the city.

As Boston joins together to honor and remember those who have given their lives for our country, let us not forget their bravery and sacrifice that allows us to live in freedom today.
