Bloomington Safety Week Brings Bike Rides, Community Events and Safe Streets Conversations August 22-28

~ Bloomington, IN- The City of Bloomington is gearing up for its annual Safety Week, which will take place from August 22-28. This event is part of the ongoing Safe Streets and Roads for All Action Plan, a city-wide effort to improve transportation options and make Bloomington a safer and more accessible place for all residents.

The week-long event will feature a series of events aimed at gathering feedback from residents, promoting community collaboration, and bringing people together to discuss ways to make the streets safer. Three evening events have been planned, offering residents of all ages the opportunity to participate in various activities.

On Tuesday, August 25th, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., the Welcome Week Community Bike Tour will take place. In collaboration with the IU Office of Sustainability, this slow-paced guided group ride is open to new residents, students, community members, and anyone interested in biking around town. Participants will have the chance to meet others, explore comfortable bike routes around Bloomington, and enjoy a community ride starting and ending on IU's campus. The following day, Wednesday August 26th from 4 to 6 p.m., there will be a "Traffic Cones" event at The Chocolate Moose located at 405 S. Walnut St. Residents are encouraged to stop by the Planning and Transportation Department table to share their thoughts on safe streets initiatives while enjoying free ice cream.

On Thursday August 27th from 5 to 7 p.m., Kidical Mass: Back to School Bike Ride and Celebration will take place in collaboration with IU Health. This family-friendly event will feature treats, games, helmet decoration stations, free bike lights, bike-blended smoothies and more. A guided bike ride around Bryan Park will also be included in the festivities. Limited numbers of kids' bikes are available for borrowing with advance registration at bton.in/Ride.

In addition to the evening events, the City will also have pop-up booths at various locations throughout Bloomington. Residents are encouraged to stop by and participate in a brief interactive survey question.
