80 Arts, Culture, Heritage, and Science Organizations Funded by Tacoma Creates for 2026-2027

~ The Tacoma Creates Advisory Board (TCAB) has announced the approval of contracts for the 2026-2027 funding cycle, totaling approximately $6.4 million. These contracts will be awarded to 80 local non-profit organizations whose primary purpose is to advance or preserve arts, culture, heritage, and science in the Tacoma community.

This marks the beginning of the seventh year of funding through Tacoma Creates, which is the first cultural access program of its kind in Washington state. The program aims to sustain and expand Tacoma's vital and vibrant cultural sector, which serves community members of all ages and hosts hundreds of large and small events throughout the city.

Mayor Anders Ibsen expressed his pride in being a part of such a vibrant community and his gratitude for the success of Tacoma Creates in improving exposure and support for local artists. Deputy Mayor Joe Bushnell also emphasized the importance of arts and culture in making Tacoma feel like home, stating that he is proud of the Council's commitment to renewing funding for Tacoma Creates.

District 1 Council Member John Hines highlighted how supporting cultural organizations is important to residents in his district and expressed excitement for the upcoming events that will be funded by this cycle. District 3 Council Member Jamika Scott emphasized how cultural organizations have a unique ability to bring people together and promote understanding, particularly among young people. She sees Tacoma Creates as a testament to the community's dedication to a diverse cultural sector.

District 4 Council Member Sandesh Sadalge spoke about how these awards are not just an investment but also a reflection of Tacoma's commitment to fostering acceptance and belonging within its community.

The 2026-2027 funding cycle will cover programming that occurs between July 1, 2026 and June 30, 2027. The TCAB has selected 80 organizations to receive funding during this cycle. These include well-known names such as Museum of Glass, Symphony Tacoma, and Tacoma Art Museum, as well as smaller organizations like Das Biest Performance Project and Screaming Butterflies Theatre.

Other recipients include community-focused organizations such as Communities for a Healthy Bay and Tacoma Refugee Choir, as well as those that celebrate diversity and promote inclusivity, such as Guma'Imahe and Queer NW.

The funding provided by Tacoma Creates will not only support these organizations but also contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and supporting small businesses. It will also help bring the community together through various events and programs.

With this latest round of funding, Tacoma Creates continues to make a significant impact on the city's cultural sector. The program's success is a testament to the city's dedication to promoting arts, culture, heritage, and science for all its residents.
