Twenty Adult Learners Honored at Scholarship Ceremony Hosted by the City of Boston Worker Empowerment Cabinet

~ The City of Boston Worker Empowerment Cabinet recently hosted the 37th Annual First Literacy Scholarship Ceremony at Boston's Great Hall in Faneuil Hall on September 2, 2026. The ceremony was a celebration of 20 adult learners who were awarded First Literacy Scholarships for the upcoming 2026-2027 school year.

Since its inception in 1990, the First Literacy Scholarship Program has granted nearly 700 scholarships to adult learners across Massachusetts. These awards are given to recognize educational achievements and potential, community service, and perseverance in the face of adversity. Eligibility for the scholarship is based on a nomination from the student's Adult Basic Education program, acceptance into a college or training program, and proof of financial need.

The ceremony was attended by Chief of Worker Empowerment Trinh Nguyen, who welcomed the scholars and congratulated them on their accomplishments. In her speech, Nguyen emphasized the importance of adult education and how it fuels not only individual success but also contributes to the economy as a whole.

"As funders, community partners, or scholarship recipients, this is not just about receiving a scholarship. It's about fueling the economy and being an economic engine," said Nguyen.

Having come to the U.S. as a refugee immigrant from Vietnam with her family in the 1980s, Nguyen also spoke about how First Literacy provides opportunities for all adults to thrive regardless of their background or language.

"At a time when funding for adult education is lacking, it's crucial to recognize that it plays a vital role in building a skilled and adaptable workforce and economy," she added. "The City of Boston and First Literacy share a strong commitment to lifelong learning and creating pathways for adults to improve their skills, access education and job training, and succeed in today's economy."

During the ceremony, one of the scholarship recipients named Wenley shared his story with attendees. Wenley is a student at UMass Boston and has been awarded a First Literacy Scholarship for the third consecutive year. With this scholarship, he has been working towards completing his bachelor's degree in computer science with the goal of pursuing a career in cybersecurity.

"I have come to believe that we should not only focus on what we can gain from education, but also on what we can do with it for others," said Wenley. "I want to use my education not only to build a better future for myself and my family, but also to protect others, create opportunities, and give back to the community that has supported me."

The ceremony also recognized both new and continuing scholarship recipients. All of the adult learners who received scholarships have overcome significant obstacles to reach this point. Many are heads of households juggling caregiving and financial responsibilities, while others are the first in their families to pursue higher education.

Terry Witherell, Executive Director of First Literacy, expressed her admiration for the scholars' perseverance and highlighted the importance of First Literacy in their journeys.

"Every time I attend this ceremony, I am inspired by our scholars and their determination," said Witherell. "It reminds me why First Literacy matters so much."
