DARWIN, Australia - Rezul -- Independent author, publisher and researcher Peta Oakes, writing as Gaelic Mac Dubhdara, announces the forthcoming release of The Measure of Heaven, an exploration of how humanity learned to measure time by observing the heavens.
Long before mechanical clocks, people watched the movements of the Sun, Moon, stars and wandering planets. Their repeating cycles provided some of humanity's earliest measures of days, months, seasons and years, transforming the sky into a vast celestial clock.
The Measure of Heaven follows the development of astronomy and timekeeping across the ancient world, exploring how Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilisations observed celestial cycles and gradually transformed those observations into calendars, mathematical systems and increasingly sophisticated models of the cosmos.
The book examines the development of lunar and solar calendars, the 365-day year, Mesopotamian sexagesimal mathematics, the division of time into units based upon sixty, planetary traditions and the seven-day week. It also considers the relationship between astronomy, religion, agriculture, kingship and the practical need to organise human society.
