Texas: Governor Abbott Celebrates United States Marine Corps' 250th Birthday

~ On November 10th, Governor Greg Abbott commemorated the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps (USMC) at a ceremony held at the Texas Capitol. The event was attended by Texas Marines, service members, and veterans who gathered to honor the legacy and service of the USMC.

In his speech, Governor Abbott emphasized the crucial role that Marines have played in protecting the rights and liberties of Americans for 250 years. He also highlighted the strength and might of the US military, stating that it is what makes America the greatest country in the world.

During the ceremony, Governor Abbott presented a Texas flag that was flown over the Capitol to USMC Retired Colonel Joe McPhail. He also issued a proclamation celebrating the 250th anniversary of the USMC. The Governor then joined Colonel McPhail in cutting a special birthday cake with a Marine Corps Officers sword.

At 104 years old, Colonel McPhail is recognized as one of the oldest living F4U Corsair pilots. He served in World War II and Korea, earning two Distinguished Flying Crosses during his time in service.

The ceremony was also attended by other notable figures such as USMC Lieutenant Colonel Andrew Dawsley, Texas Veterans Commission Secretary Chuck Wright, Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Joe Esparza - both of whom are Marine veterans - as well as Round Rock High School JROTC Marine Color Guard, singer Monty Warden, and Fox 7 Austin anchor Mike Warren.
