Texas: Governor Abbott Appoints 21 To Family Violence Criminal Homicide Prevention Task Force

~ Austin, TX- Governor Greg Abbott has recently appointed 21 members to the Family Violence Criminal Homicide Prevention Task Force. The members will serve for terms set by the Governor and will work towards preventing family violence criminal homicide in the state.

The Task Force, which was created by Governor Abbott, will focus on analyzing the top risk factors that may lead to family violence criminal homicide. They will also provide advice and resources to state agencies and nonprofit organizations in order to improve training for professionals who interact with survivors of family violence.

One of the newly appointed members is Heather Bellino from Austin. Bellino is the chief executive officer of the Texas Advocacy Project, an organization that provides free legal services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Jia Benno, also from Austin, has been appointed as the injury prevention unit director for the Texas Department of State Health Services. Megan Bermea from Cedar Park will serve as the program director for the Office of Family Services at Texas Health and Human Services.

Hillary England from Pflugerville has been named as the director of trafficking and sexual violence prevention programs at the Office of the Governor. Allison Garcia from Round Rock will bring her expertise as deputy chief of government affairs at the Office of the Attorney General.

Other members include Mariah Gardner from Converse who works as a field manager at CVS Health, Staley Heatly from Vernon who serves as Wilbarger County Attorney, and Kathryn Jacob from Waxahachie who is president and CEO of The Archway (formerly known as SafeHaven) in Tarrant County.

Julie Kinser from Amarillo brings her experience as director of leadership and staff development at the Department of Family and Protective Services – Child Protective Services. Kevin Lawrence from Pflugerville serves as executive director of the Texas Municipal Police Association while Daisy Lopez from Brownsville is director of operations at Friendship of Women, Inc.

Heather Mahaffey from Denison, Michael McNutt from Round Rock, and Jarvis Parsons from Bryan will also serve on the Task Force. Mahaffey is a program coordinator at Grayson Crisis Center, McNutt is a program manager for the Texas Violent Death Reporting System at the Department of State Health Services, and Parsons is the Brazos County District Attorney.

April Propst from Abilene will bring her expertise as an associate judge for the Office of Court Administration while Hannah Rahaman from Katy serves as an appeals and legal section manager at the Office of the Attorney General Crime Victims Services Division.

Michelle Shields from Amarillo is director of advocacy services at Family Support Services of Amarillo and Chris Smyth from Round Rock brings his experience as a sergeant at the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Gloria Terry from Buda serves as CEO of the Texas Council on Family Violence while Leila Wood from Austin is a professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Lastly, Jamie Wright from Houston will serve as a senior management and program analyst at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of the Inspector General.

The Task Force will work together to collect, analyze, and make publicly available information that can assist in preventing family violence criminal homicide. They will also develop policy recommendations to help the state combat this issue. The members are committed to making a positive impact in their communities and are honored to be appointed by Governor Abbott to serve on this important task force.
