Texas: Governor Abbott Announces Over $443,000 In Career Training Grants For Three Panhandle Area Schools
Rezul News/10733990
~ In a recent announcement, Governor Greg Abbott revealed that three schools in the Panhandle region have been awarded Jobs and Education for Texans (JET) grants by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The total amount of these grants is $443,271 and they will be used to support career and technical education (CTE) training programs.
The JET grants will assist the schools in purchasing and installing equipment necessary for training 109 students in high-demand occupations such as nursing and welding. Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of CTE programs in driving the Texas economy, stating that these grants will provide students with more opportunities to succeed in their chosen careers.
TWC Chairman Joe Esparza also expressed his enthusiasm for the impact these grants will have on promoting nursing and welding careers in the Panhandle region. He noted that students will receive hands-on training to earn credentials that meet current and future employer needs.

At a ceremony held at Amarillo College, TWC Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett presented the awards to state and local officials as well as school staff. The three JET grants awarded are as follows: a $334,555 grant to Hale Center Independent School District (ISD) for training 30 students as licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses in partnership with South Plains College, a $46,297 grant to Happy ISD for training 29 students as welders in partnership with Amarillo College, and a $62,419 grant to Hartley ISD for training 50 students as welders in partnership with Frank Phillips College.
Funded by the Texas Legislature every two years, TWC uses JET grants to cover start-up costs for developing or expanding CTE programs at public community, state and technical colleges, school districts, and open-enrollment charter schools. The equipment purchased through these grants must be used specifically for training students in high-demand occupations. The JET grant awards for this fiscal year have yet to be announced and will be made public in the coming months.
For more information on TWC's JET grant program, interested parties can visit their website. With these grants, the Panhandle region is set to see a boost in CTE programs and an increase in skilled workers for high-demand occupations.
