Texas: Governor Abbott Activates State Emergency Response Resources Ahead Of Severe Weather Threat

~ As severe weather threatens to impact portions of Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has taken action to ensure the safety of communities across the state. In a press release today, the governor announced that he has directed the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources.

"Texas stands ready to deploy all necessary resources to help local officials respond to potential severe weather across the state," said Governor Abbott. He urged Texans to remain weather-aware and regularly check road conditions, as well as heed the guidance of state and local officials.

According to the National Weather Service, multiple storm systems are expected to bring strong to severe thunderstorms across large portions of the state. The first system is expected to hit North Texas later today, with the risk shifting westward towards parts of Northwest Texas such as the Panhandle, South Plains, Permian Basin, Big Country, and Concho Valley throughout the week. Towards the end of the week, the threat is expected to shift back towards North, Northeast, and Central Texas. These conditions are anticipated to continue into early next week.

The hazards associated with these storms include large hail, damaging winds, heavy rainfall leading to flash flooding, and possible tornadoes. Texans are advised to monitor local forecast information as conditions develop.

At Governor Abbott's direction, several state emergency response resources are available for deployment in support of local response operations. These include Swiftwater Rescue Boat Squads and Urban Search & Rescue Teams from Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (Texas A&M Task Force 1 and Texas Task Force 2), personnel and high-profile vehicles from the Texas National Guard for assisting stranded motorists and conducting flood rescues using Chinook and Blackhawk helicopters.

Other resources include personnel from various agencies such as Texas Department of Transportation for monitoring road conditions statewide; Saw Crews from Texas A&M Forest Service for clearing roadways; Game Wardens from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department along with rescue boat teams and helicopters with hoist capability for flood rescues; Texas Highway Patrol Troopers, helicopters with hoist capability, and Tactical Marine Unit from Texas Department of Public Safety; Severe Weather Support Packages consisting of medics, ambulances, and all-terrain vehicles from Texas Department of State Health Services (Texas Emergency Medical Task Force); Disaster Assessment and Recovery Agents as well as County Extension Agents from Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for supporting agricultural and livestock needs; Power outage monitoring and coordination with utility providers by Public Utility Commission of Texas; Monitoring of the state's natural gas supply and communication with the oil and gas industry by Railroad Commission of Texas; Air/water/wastewater monitoring by Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The governor has also activated the Texas State Emergency Operations Center at Level III (Increased Readiness) to support severe weather operations as well as ongoing wildfire operations in some parts of the state.

Texans are encouraged to take proactive measures in preparing for severe weather by packing an emergency supply kit, making an emergency plan, and following guidance from local officials.
