Tacoma: Public Hearing for Off-Street Parking Code Update Set for December 1
Rezul News/10750164
~ The Tacoma City Council has scheduled a public hearing for Dec. 1, 2026, on proposed changes to the city's Off-Street Parking Code.
The hearing will take place after the council's regular agenda items, but no earlier than 5:15 p.m., at the Tacoma Municipal Building, 747 Market St., and on Zoom. The meeting ID is 848 3423 3126 and the passcode is 349099.
The proposed amendments respond to Washington state laws adopted in 2024 and 2025 that changed how cities may regulate off-street parking. Tacoma must update its regulations to comply with state requirements by Jan. 27, 2027, the city said.
The Planning Commission recommends eliminating minimum off-street parking requirements across all zoning districts and land-use categories. The proposal goes beyond state requirements, which limit or prohibit minimums for certain uses and developments near frequent transit.

Removing minimums would not prohibit parking, according to the city. Property owners and developers could still provide off-street parking based on site conditions, market demand and operational needs.
The proposal would also remove Tacoma's separate local requirement for accessible parking when no general off-street parking is provided. Where parking is provided, accessible parking would remain subject to applicable state and federal requirements and the city's Building Code.
The amendments would not change on-street parking rules or curb-management programs. Existing standards for parking design, site access, loading, emergency access, landscaping and bicycle parking would remain, the city said.
The state Legislature cited reducing development costs, supporting housing production, encouraging transportation options and reducing reliance on automobiles as reasons for its parking-law changes.
The Planning Commission's findings and recommendations, along with supporting information, are available at tacoma.gov/parkingcodeupdate.
