Tacoma: City Council Approves Contract, Officially Appointing Hyun Kim as City Manager

~ At the Tacoma City Council meeting on March 31, the council officially approved an employment contract for Hyun Kim, making him the new City Manager for Washington's third-largest city. This decision came after the council's previous vote to enter into contract negotiations with Kim, who was serving as the Interim City Manager at the time.

Mayor Anders Ibsen expressed his excitement about Kim's appointment, stating, "We are thrilled to confirm City Manager Kim. I have full confidence in his ability to transform city government and deliver the bold results that Tacoma residents are demanding."

As per the approved agreement, Kim will now serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the City of Tacoma. The finalized contract includes an annual salary of $358,363.20.

Prior to this appointment, Kim had been serving as Interim City Manager and had already made significant contributions to the city. He led enterprise-wide initiatives and worked closely with the City Council on complex policy and operational matters. With extensive executive leadership experience in local government, including roles as Deputy City Manager in Tacoma and City Manager in Fife, Wash., Kim is well-equipped for his new permanent role. He has also held senior finance leadership positions in Boulder City, Nev., and served as a City Administrator in Gillette, Wyo.

As the sole employee of the City Council, the City Manager is appointed by and reports directly to them. In this role, Kim will serve as a trusted partner, guiding the implementation of policy priorities while ensuring equitable, efficient, and effective service delivery for the community.

Some of Kim's ongoing responsibilities include managing the day-to-day operations of a dynamic, full-service city with over 220,000 residents. He will also oversee a biennial budget of $4.7 billion, including a $635 million General Fund. Additionally, he will provide executive leadership and direction for all city departments and operations, as well as manage a workforce of more than 4,000 employees.

With his extensive experience and dedication to public service, Hyun Kim is poised to lead Tacoma towards a brighter future as its new City Manager.
