Tacoma: Applicants Sought for the Climate and Sustainability Commission

~ The Tacoma City Council is currently seeking individuals to fill seven seats on the Climate and Sustainability Commission, including the youth seat reserved for someone between the ages of 16-24. As stated in a recent press release, the Commission's main purpose is to hold the community accountable for implementing Tacoma's 2030 Climate Action Plan and to involve the public in sustainability issues.

According to the press release, the City Council is looking for Commission members who reside within Tacoma's boundaries and can provide a balanced representation of various stakeholders. This includes individuals from environmental, business, labor, housing, industrial, port, transportation, education, building, and residential communities. The selected members will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating policy recommendations to the City Council through formal reporting methods such as letters and testimonies.

The time commitment for active participation as a Commissioner is expected to be between two to four hours per month. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month at 5:00 p.m., typically lasting two hours. These meetings are held both virtually via Zoom and in-person at the Tacoma Municipal Building.

In line with their commitment to promoting equity and anti-racism within their organization, the City of Tacoma encourages individuals from diverse backgrounds to apply for these vacancies. This includes BIPOC individuals, LGBTQ+ individuals, those with disabilities, seniors, youth, immigrants, and refugees.

Applicants who are appointed will be required to complete training on Open Public Meetings Act and Public Records Act within 90 days of their appointment. This training will be provided by the Washington State Office of the Attorney General.
