Springfield: SPD Steps Up Seat Belt Enforcement for Memorial Day Weekend

Rezul News/10710250
~ As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Springfield Police Department's Traffic Section is ramping up their efforts to enforce seat belt laws. This initiative is part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Click it or Ticket campaign, which began on May 24th and will continue through June 6th.

During this time, officers will be paying special attention to motorists who are not wearing seat belts and ensuring that children are properly restrained while in a vehicle. This comes after a concerning statistic from 2020, where 989 motorists were killed in Missouri traffic crashes, with 433 of those being unbelted. Additionally, 47% of children killed in Missouri traffic crashes were found to be unrestrained.

The importance of wearing a seat belt cannot be emphasized enough. In fatal crashes, almost 85% of vehicle occupants who were ejected from their vehicles were killed. Comparatively, less than one percent of crash victims who were buckled up were ejected from their vehicles. This highlights the significant difference that wearing a seat belt can make in saving lives.

Furthermore, statistics show that motorists are 75% less likely to be killed in rollover crashes if they are wearing a seat belt. In addition, data from 2016 revealed that 70% of drivers and passengers killed in nighttime crashes were not wearing seat belts.

The Springfield Police Department urges all motorists to buckle up and arrive alive this Memorial Day weekend. Let us all do our part in keeping our roads safe by following seat belt laws and ensuring that everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained. Remember, seatbelts save lives.
