~ Springfield Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting at Kum N Go on E. Kearney
On May 17, 2021, the Springfield Police Department responded to a homicide at 3231 W. Page. During the investigation, a person of interest was identified as John Hilt, a 36-year-old male from Springfield, MO. Hilt had an outstanding warrant for Resisting Arrest in Christian County.
The following day, on May 18, detectives from the Special Investigations Section conducted surveillance on Hilt and followed him in a vehicle to the Kum N Go located at 3445 E. Kearney. The suspect vehicle was occupied by two males and a female.
According to police reports, the detectives attempted to arrest Hilt for his outstanding warrant but were met with resistance when he displayed a gun and fired shots at them. In response, two detectives returned fire at Hilt as he fled in the suspect vehicle with the female. One of the males inside the vehicle suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and arm but is expected to recover.

After fleeing from Kum N Go, police followed the suspect vehicle to Welcome Inn located at 3550 E. Evergreen where they set up a perimeter. Eventually, Hilt was taken into custody with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to his neck and arm from the earlier incident. The female subject was uninjured.
Both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation takes place. The case will also be presented to the Greene County Prosecutor for review and potential charges.
The Criminal Investigation Division of Springfield Police Department is currently investigating this incident and is asking anyone with information to come forward by contacting them directly or making an anonymous call to Crime Stoppers.
This marks another officer-involved shooting in Springfield this year, highlighting the dangers that law enforcement officers face while carrying out their duties. The department has not released any further details about this incident at this time.
