Springfield: Motor Vehicle Crash with Injury

~ On the evening of July 6th, 2021, a motor vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Campbell Ave. and Commercial St. in Springfield. According to reports from the Springfield Police Department, officers were called to the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m.

The crash involved a 2016 Toyota 4Runner being driven by a juvenile male who was traveling northbound on Campbell Ave. and attempting to cross Commercial St. The vehicle crossed multiple sets of railroad tracks before colliding with the side of an eastbound train. The impact caused the vehicle to be dragged alongside the train until it reached Washington Ave., where it caught fire.

The driver of the Toyota suffered serious burns but was able to escape from the vehicle before being taken to a local hospital for treatment. As of now, he is listed in critical condition.

The collision also resulted in the derailment of both the eastbound train and a second westbound train. Additionally, damage was sustained to the bridge over Washington Street, leading to its closure between Commercial and Atlantic Streets for an unknown period of time.
