~ Spokane, WA- A brush fire broke out at People's Park in the 2800 block of West Clarke Avenue yesterday afternoon, prompting a swift response from local firefighters. According to Justin de Ruyter, Spokane Fire PIO, multiple reports of a significant smoke column led to the dispatch of firefighters at 4:49 p.m.
Engine 4, serving Browne's Addition, arrived on the scene within six minutes and discovered the fire near the confluence of Latah Creek and the Spokane River. The fire had already crossed a roadway and was burning groups of trees. As the fire intensified, it was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm at 5:26 p.m.
In an effort to contain the blaze, a Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) helicopter arrived soon after and began water drops along the perimeter. The combined efforts of aerial and ground crews were successful in slowing down the spread of the fire.
