Spokane: Lions Learning Center planned for Riverfront Park

~ Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Central Lions Club is on the verge of completing their final fundraising efforts for their latest project, the Lions Learning Center in Riverfront Park. This outdoor classroom will be housed under a revitalized and re-purposed shelter from Expo '74, located on the west side of the park at the Post St. Bridge.

The Lions Learning Center will serve as a reservable outdoor learning area for schools and community groups, promoting nature-based and experiential learning. It will also feature an interactive pollinator/native garden. The planned improvements include amphitheater seating, small group break-out space, and renovations to the shelter such as roofing, seating, electrical work, landscaping, and fencing.

The entire project is being funded by donations from the community. So far, the club has raised $200,000 out of their $300,000 goal. Construction will begin once the fundraising goal is met.

Gary Guenther of the Spokane Central Lions Club expressed their vision for this project to be a generational gift to the Spokane community. He stated that it will be a welcoming place for people and groups to gather and enjoy Riverfront Park while using the Lions Learning Center as a safe and fun venue for teaching and learning. This project continues the club's 104 years of service and dedication to the people of Spokane.

Jon Moog, director of Riverfront Park, also shared his excitement about this new addition to the park. He mentioned that Riverfront Park is already a destination for learning about Spokane's history, environment, and hydro-electric power. With this new outdoor classroom specifically designed for learning in an outdoor environment, students will have a safe and comfortable home-base to explore the park while teachers can enhance their lesson plans with dedicated resources.

The concept for the Lions Learning Center was proposed by students and teachers at Lumen High School. Dig Studios created the concept plans for the Lions Club with input from the community. The Spokane Parks Foundation is also supporting fundraising efforts for this project. Both the Spokane Parks Foundation's Board of Directors and the Park Board have approved the concept and name at their May 2026 meetings.

The Spokane Parks & Recreation division has previously worked with the Spokane Central Lions Club on projects such as the Helen Keller Garden at Manito Park. They expressed their gratitude towards the club for their generosity and commitment to improving park amenities for all members of the community.

Lions Clubs International is known as the world's largest service club organization with over 1.4 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs across more than 200 countries and geographical areas. The Spokane Central Lions Club has been serving their community for 104 years.

The City of Spokane Parks & Recreation department manages nearly 120 properties spanning over 4,000 acres of park land.
