Spokane: City To Provide Extra Garbage Collection for Downgraded Evacuation Zones

~ As the city of Spokane continues to grapple with the aftermath of the recent wildfires, the Solid Waste Management Department is stepping up to assist residents who are returning to downgraded evacuation areas. According to Kirstin Davis, Communications Manager for the city, those who remain in Level 3 evacuation zones will not receive collection services at this time.

However, for those who are able to return home, the department is prepared to collect additional garbage as needed. Davis urges residents to be patient as they navigate this catastrophic event and assures them that they will not be charged for these extra collections.

For residents living outside of the recently evacuated zones, normal collection services for garbage, recycling, and food and yard waste will continue as scheduled. However, due to crews responding to evacuation areas, there may be some adjustments in timing.

Davis also reminds residents that on non-regular pickup days, they can place their garbage carts out on the curb starting today. While they can put out their carts daily if needed, there is no guarantee that crews will be able to collect from every neighborhood every day in addition to regular pickups. Special rounds will be made starting Monday for downgraded evacuation areas.

It is important for residents not to put out extra bags on non-regular pickup days as special pickups will be unpredictable and based on available resources. Any fire-damaged carts can be replaced free of charge by contacting Spokane 3-1-1.

On normal collection days, residents are allowed to put out extra bags free of charge. However, Davis reminds them that fire debris or ash cannot be accepted at this time. Additionally, bulky items or appliances should not be placed out for collection yet as they will be handled differently and guidance will be provided soon.

Residents are advised to have all their carts and extra bags out by 6 a.m. on normal collection days as routes may need to be adjusted during this time. The city of Spokane is working diligently to provide the necessary services and support to its residents during this difficult time.
