Spokane: City Testing Shows Water Quality is Safe

~ As the City of Spokane continues to battle the aftermath of the recent fires, the Water Department has announced that it is delivering safe and clean water to the affected areas. After conducting a series of tests for bacteria and other potential contaminants, the department has confirmed that the water is safe for consumption.

According to Public Works Director Marlene Feist, residents who have been evacuated and have not used their water for more than a week are advised to flush their plumbing system before drinking. This simple step can help avoid any issues with stagnant water in their homes.

"The water in your internal plumbing is stale from sitting idle and will benefit from being refreshed when people are able to return home," says Feist.

The Water Department recommends flushing water through internal plumbing fixtures to "turn over" the unused water and refresh it from the main supply through pipes. This process can also help improve the freshness of the water after a period of non-use.

Residents are advised to remove faucet aerators from sinks throughout their homes and soak them in warm vinegar to remove any mineral buildup or debris before reinstalling them. They should then turn on all cold-water faucets one at a time, leaving each running as they move through their home. The bathtub faucet should be turned on last, while those with only a shower should turn it on last.

After allowing the water to run for a short period, residents should make another pass through their home to turn off all faucets. This will replace any stagnant water in their plumbing with fresh water from the public supply. Other infrequently used fixtures such as outdoor hose bibs/spigots, refrigerator water dispensers or ice maker supplies, and washing machine supply lines should also be flushed if applicable.

The City continues to conduct regular tests throughout its system and additional testing in affected areas. So far, there have been no reports of unsafe bacteria or chemicals in the water.

Community members who have concerns about their water quality can call 3-1-1 Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., or 509.625.7800 outside of these hours. The annual water quality reports can also be found on the City's website.

To ensure the safety and freshness of their water, residents are encouraged to follow these simple steps upon returning home after being evacuated. By working together, the City and its residents can continue to overcome the challenges brought on by the recent fires.
