Spokane City Council Approves Activation of Public Spaces Program

~ During Monday's Legislative Session, the Spokane City Council unanimously passed a resolution to implement a public spaces program. The program, which was proposed by Council President Betsy Wilkerson, aims to promote the use of public spaces by simplifying the city's permitting and licensing processes and making it more affordable.

The new program will allow for easier activation of public spaces such as sidewalks, streets, and parks during festivals, parades, and athletic events. This will open up opportunities for sidewalk cafes, street eateries, and parklets to enhance community engagement.

Council President Wilkerson expressed her excitement about the resolution passing, stating that it not only improves public spaces but also fosters a vibrant community where residents and visitors can come together to celebrate and connect.

The responsibility of implementing this new program will fall on the Community and Economic Development Division and the Office of the Mayor. Council Member Zack Zappone expressed his gratitude towards Mayor Brown and her administration for making it easier to enhance public spaces in Spokane.
