Severe storm causes significant damage, power outages in Springfield
Rezul News/10706702
Springfield, Mo. ~ A severe storm with high winds has caused significant damage and widespread power outages in Springfield, Missouri. The storm, which hit the metro area on Tuesday evening, has left 37,000 customers without power according to City Utilities.
City Utilities is currently assessing the full impact of the storm and expects the number of outages to increase as more customers report their loss of power. The company is working diligently to restore power to all affected areas but warns that due to the extensive damage, it may take several days to complete the restoration process.
In response to this weather emergency, City Utilities has mobilized all available resources and has also requested mutual assistance from other utility companies. Customers are urged to report their outages by calling (888) 863-9001 so that their address can be included in the restoration efforts.
The top priority for City Utilities is addressing downed power lines as they pose a serious safety risk. Customers are reminded to always assume that downed power lines are energized and should stay far away from them. Any sightings of downed lines should be reported immediately by calling (417) 863-9000, which is reserved for emergencies and downed line reports only.

Updates on restoration progress will be provided through City Utilities' social media channels. The company appreciates the patience and support of its customers as they work towards restoring service across the community.
The severe storm has also caused disruptions in public safety services. The Springfield Police Department and Greene County Sheriff's Department have been responding to calls for service including traffic control, reports of downed trees and power lines on roadways, and damage to structures.
Motorists are advised that traffic lights throughout the city may be impacted by power outages. In such cases, intersections should be treated as four-way stops and drivers are urged to travel slowly and use caution.
Springfield Public Works has also been mobilized to assess damage and clear debris from blocked roadways. Residents can report debris on the road by calling 417-864-1010 or emailing the Public Works department.
The high volume of calls has also affected the Springfield Greene County 911 telecommunicators, with some calls being redirected to surrounding jurisdictions. To help prioritize storm-related calls, residents are reminded to only call 911 in life-threatening situations such as being trapped in a home or vehicle, downed power lines that are smoking or sparking, medical emergencies, or if someone in the home is on oxygen therapy.
