Racquet Club of Philadelphia appoints Michael J. Sofia as new General Manager

PHILADELPHIA - Rezul -- The Racquet Club of Philadelphia, a historic club founded in 1889, and located in the heart of Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square neighborhood, is pleased to announce that its Board of Governors has appointed Michael J. Sofia as its next General Manager.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Sofia was the General Manager/Chief Operating Officer of Radley Run Country Club, a full service membership club located in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Prior thereto, Mr. Sofia held various club and hospitality management positions, including with Running Deer Golf Club, Loews Annapolis Hotel, and Loews Philadelphia Hotel. He is an active member of the Club Management Association of America. The Board engaged GSI Executive Search, a nationally respected firm specializing in private club leadership and consulting, to assist it with the search process.

I am excited to lead this beloved institution in a way that celebrates its rich history while creating a space that meets the needs of modern times, including enhancing the member and guest experience and further solidifying the Club as a premier destination. As one of Philadelphia's oldest sporting and social clubs, The Racquet Club has long been a symbol of tradition, excellence, and community and has an outstanding and accomplished membership." said Mr. Sofia.

"The Board selected Mr. Sofia due to his extensive club and hospitality management experience, including financial reporting and budgeting, long-term planning, governance, revenue and membership enhancement, and all aspects of club operations. We are fortunate to have someone with his professionalism, skill set and experience lead our world class institution." said Douglas M. Lurio, President of the Board of Governors.
The Racquet Club in conjunction with the Club's Historic Preservation and Education Fund is in the process of refurbishing many of its public spaces, including the recent completion of its first floor historic Reading Room and lobby area, as well as additional interior spaces and exterior facades. These planned improvements include updated member lounges and eating spaces, improved fitness areas, a modernized court tennis and squash complex, and other facilities designed to promote an exceptional experience for members and guests alike.
Founded in 1889, The Racquet Club of Philadelphia is one of the oldest racquets sports oriented clubs in the United States. Located on Sixteenth Street in the heart of Rittenhouse Square, the club offers a wide range of world-class amenities, including court tennis, squash, fitness, and social spaces, all set within a historic setting. The Racquet Club is dedicated to fostering community, preserving its historic architecture, and accommodating local, national and international visitors as well as hosting local, national, and international tournaments in squash, court tennis, and racquets. The Clubhouse is recognized as historically and architecturally significant and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
