Rezul News/10734669
ANNAPOLIS, MD (May 07, 2026) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Board of Public Works has recently approved five new easements through the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation, securing over 534 acres of prime farmland in Caroline, Charles, and Dorchester counties for future generations and agricultural endeavors. This decision was made on May 6, 2026, and marks a significant step towards preserving Maryland's agricultural landscape.
According to Maryland Secretary of Agriculture Kevin Atticks, "Every acre we preserve is a promise to our farming families and a vital investment in Maryland's resilience." He further emphasized the importance of these easements in strengthening local food systems, supporting rural economies, and advancing conservation goals while keeping agriculture at the heart of Maryland's identity.

Established in 1977, the Maryland Agricultural Preservation Foundation has been dedicated to permanently protecting land in all 23 counties of the state. To date, they have preserved over 393,000 acres. The Foundation acquires agricultural preservation easements from farmers who wish to conserve their land. These easements play a crucial role in sustaining Maryland's agricultural landscape, enhancing local food systems, and supporting rural communities' economies.
Maryland has already achieved its "30 by 30 conservation goal" set forth in the Maryland the Beautiful Act two years ahead of schedule in May 2024. This goal aimed to conserve 30% of the state's total land area by 2030. With these newly-approved easements, the state is now looking towards its next conservation goal - conserving 40% by 2040.
For more information on the Foundation or about agricultural land preservation, interested parties can contact Executive Director Michelle Cable at (410) 841-5860. These recent approvals are a testament to Maryland's commitment to preserving its agricultural heritage for future generations.
