~ Colorado Springs Mayor Reflects on America's 250th Birthday and the Promise of the American Experiment

In a letter released today, Mayor Yemi Mobolade of Colorado Springs shared his reflections on the meaning of Independence Day and the 250th birthday of the United States. As a naturalized citizen and the first elected Black mayor of Colorado Springs, Mayor Mobolade spoke from the heart about his love for this country and its promise.

The mayor began by acknowledging that America's story has never been one of perfection, but rather one of perseverance. From its birth during a revolution to enduring challenges such as the Civil War, Great Depression, and two World Wars, America has always risen above adversity. And now, as we celebrate its 250th birthday, it is our turn to continue writing its story.

Mayor Mobolade emphasized that being an American is both a privilege and a responsibility. He shared his belief that America is an extraordinary blessing while also acknowledging that it is still a promise being fulfilled. This duality, he believes, is one of our nation's greatest strengths.

As residents of Colorado Springs, Mayor Mobolade reminded us that we live in Olympic City USA and beneath Pikes Peak - "America's Mountain" which inspired the iconic song "America the Beautiful." He also highlighted our city's proud military presence and our community's strong sense of neighborly care.

Looking towards the future, Mayor Mobolade urged us to do more than just look back with gratitude on America's 250 years. He called for us to reject division without rejecting each other, to love our neighbors and honor their dignity, and to welcome diverse ideas while maintaining compassion. He encouraged us to serve our communities, participate in democracy, and lead with courage, integrity, humility, and perseverance.

The mayor ended his letter with words from George Washington: "We should never despair...Our situation before has been unpromising and has changed for the better. So I trust, it will again." He expressed his belief in these words and wished a happy 250th birthday to America and a happy Independence Day to Colorado Springs.

In conclusion, Mayor Mobolade reminded us that the American experiment is not over. Our story is still being written, and each of us has the privilege and responsibility to help write its next chapter. As we celebrate this milestone birthday, let us remember the words of our first president and continue to move onward and upward as a nation.

From his family to ours, Mayor Mobolade wished for God's blessings upon us all - our families, Colorado Springs, and the United States of America. As we reflect on his words, may we be inspired to play our part in shaping America's future for the better.
