NEWS RELEASE: Maryland Celebrates Weights and Measures Week: We Measure What Matters

ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 2, 2026) ~ Annapolis, MD - The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) is proud to announce the celebration of National Weights and Measures Week from March 1-7, 2026. This annual event highlights the importance of precision in everyday life and its impact on the state's economy. With the theme "We Measure What Matters," this year's celebration emphasizes the crucial role that accurate measurements play in the lives of Maryland families.

MDA Secretary Kevin Atticks stated, "Fairness in the marketplace doesn't just happen; it takes dedicated oversight." The theme "We Measure What Matters" reflects a commitment to ensuring precision in all transactions for both consumers and businesses.

The MDA's oversight responsibilities are extensive, with staff inspecting over 67,000 commercial devices across more than 6,500 businesses statewide. These inspections cover a wide range of items, including fuel pumps, grocery store scales, and packaged goods. The goal is to ensure that all measurements are accurate and fair for consumers.

One essential aspect of the program is addressing consumer complaints. In FY 2025 alone, inspectors investigated 204 complaints regarding various products such as firewood, gasoline, propane, milk jugs, and packaged chicken. Of these complaints, 23% were found to be valid and resulted in appropriate enforcement actions to rectify any violations.

National Weights and Measures Week aligns with National Weights and Measures Week, which commemorates President John Adams' signing of the first U.S. weights and measures law in 1799. This year's theme is "Collaborating with Partners and Stakeholders for a Greater Measure of Equity," highlighting the importance of partnerships within the field of weights and measures.

These collaborations include those between national organizations, national and international trade associations, as well as members of the National Council on Weights and Measures. By working together with various stakeholders, the MDA aims to ensure fairness in all transactions and promote equity in the marketplace.
