New Book - Victory at Appomattox: Grant and Lee's Final Campaign by Hampton Newsome

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Rezul -- The University Press of Kansas announces the publication of Victory at Appomattox: Grant and Lee's Final Campaign by Hampton Newsome, a new addition to the Modern War Studies series. In early April 1865, Robert E. Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia abandoned the defenses of Richmond and Petersburg in a desperate attempt to escape westward, join Confederate forces in North Carolina, and prolong the Civil War. Newsome offers a comprehensive military history of the week that followed, revealing the Appomattox Campaign as one of the Union army's most significant operational achievements.

Newsome examines the cooperation and tensions within the Union high command, the decisions and failures of Lee and his generals, and the increasingly desperate circumstances facing Confederate soldiers. Dwindling supplies, administrative failures, poor command decisions, and mounting desertion weakened Lee's army even as its soldiers continued fighting to break free. The campaign also depended on the often-overlooked contributions of US scouts and Black troops, as well as the complex logistical operations required to sustain two massive armies during a rapidly moving pursuit.

Despite its decisive importance, the Appomattox Campaign has received considerably less attention than many of the Civil War's better-known battles and operations. Victory at Appomattox brings this critical final chapter into sharper focus, offering readers a detailed account of how military decisions, intelligence, logistics, leadership, and the experiences of soldiers combined to determine the war's outcome. Through extensive research and vivid narrative, Newsome demonstrates why the campaign deserves recognition as a defining achievement of Civil War military history.
