Naperville: City Selects Community Members to Lead 2031 Bicentennial Celebration

NAPERVILLE, Ill. ~ Naperville, Illinois - The city's bicentennial celebration in 2031 will be led by three community members, as announced by a selection committee on Tuesday. The committee, which consisted of representatives from the Downtown Naperville Alliance, Naperville Chamber of Commerce, Naperville Park District, Naper Settlement and City of Naperville staff, interviewed potential candidates who applied for the role by the February 13 deadline.

The City Council is expected to officially confirm the three chairs at its meeting on May 5. The selected chairs include Stacey Fontechia as the Fundraising & Resources Chair, Atusa Freyer as the Communications & Marketing Chair, and Paul Hinterlong as the History & Heritage Chair.

Fontechia has been a resident of Naperville for over eight years and has been a part of the surrounding community for more than 35 years. She currently serves as the Sales and Sponsorship Manager for the Naperville Park District and is known for her ability to create meaningful partnerships and advertising opportunities for local and regional businesses. Fontechia's achievements include securing the Park District's first-ever naming rights partnership at Wintrust Athletic Field at Knoch Park and being honored with the Communications & Marketing's 2025 Rising Star Award. With a degree in broadcast journalism and marketing from Columbia College Chicago, Fontechia brings a creative and relationship-driven approach to her work in the Naperville community.

Freyer, a lifelong resident of Naperville, is a leader in strategy, partnerships, and experiential marketing. She currently holds the position of Chief Marketing Officer at LifeSculpt MedSpa and Wellness and is also the founder of Salt Society: Fitness & Wellness Experiences & THRIVEFest - an annual health, wellness, and fitness festival held in downtown Naperville at North Central College. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Freyer also serves on the board of directors for the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce and previously held a two-year term as chairwoman of its Women in Business Committee.

Hinterlong, a resident of Naperville for the past 60 years, has a deep passion for community service. He first became involved in community celebrations during the city's sesquicentennial celebration in 1981. Hinterlong has served on multiple City boards and commissions throughout the years and has been actively involved in various community events such as the Naperville Healing Fields, Centennial Beach 75th anniversary, and Naperville Park District 40th anniversary Aquathon committee. He will now take on the role of History & Heritage Chair for the bicentennial celebration.

The bicentennial celebration in 2031 will be a significant milestone for Naperville, offering an opportunity to celebrate its rich history, vibrant culture, and continued growth. The selected volunteer chairs will work together to plan and develop community celebrations and projects leading up to the bicentennial. They will also be responsible for fundraising efforts to support events, initiatives, and other celebratory activities. Additionally, they will be recruiting community members to serve on various subcommittees.
