Midwest Microbrew Releases Exclusive Interview with Titonka Brewing Founder

Jeff Brandt reveals how a rural Iowa auto mechanic turned home brewer built a destination craft brewery from the ground up.
MASON CITY, Iowa - Rezul -- Midwest Microbrew has released an exclusive video interview with Jeff Brandt, founder and head brewer of Titonka Brewing Company. Based in a northern Iowa town of roughly 500 residents, Brandt recounts how he transitioned from running an automotive repair shop to operating a thriving rural craft brewery and taproom that draws visitors from across the state.
Brandt began home brewing around 2016 alongside friends, and by St. Patrick's Day 2020 had sold his first commercial beer — the same day COVID-19 shutdowns swept the nation. Without a taproom, Titonka Brewing focused on keg distribution, which proved an unexpected advantage during lockdowns. By 2022, Brandt sold his auto repair business and committed full-time to brewing, opening the Titonka taproom in 2023 on a 3.5-barrel system.
"Small town vibes with big city brews," said Brandt, describing Titonka Brewing in a single phrase. The taproom, converted from his former auto shop, seats 90 guests and is open Fridays and Saturdays. Its core lineup centers on the 40 Watt American Lager — the brewery's top seller at 4.2% ABV — alongside the Rooster Tails Red Ale, Middle of Nowhere Hazy IPA, and a vanilla porter.

Titonka Brewing has cultivated a loyal local following through a 46-member mug club — currently at capacity with a waiting list of 12 — offering perks including exclusive barrel-aged releases, a monthly complimentary beer, and invitations to a private members' dinner. The brewery also distributes to Des Moines, Okoboji, Waterloo, and Clear Lake, holding two permanent taps at Iowa Tap Room in Des Moines.
"The Des Moines market has been really good for us," Brandt said. Seasonal highlights include a summer lemon shandy, a Tiketoberfest release each August, and the annual Great White Buffalo — an imperial stout rested in barrels for two years. The taproom is family-friendly, featuring a dedicated kids' play area and craft mules made with spirits from neighboring SNB Distillery.
