Midwest Microbrew Releases Exclusive Great Lakes Brewing Interview
Rezul News/10730288
Brand Development Manager Michael Williams reveals the brewery's 37-year heritage, Florida expansion, and what's next for Cleveland's craft beer pioneer.
CLEVELAND - Rezul -- Midwest Microbrew has published an in-depth interview with Michael Williams, Brand Development Manager at Great Lakes Brewing Co., offering craft beer enthusiasts a rare inside look at one of the Midwest's most storied independent breweries. The conversation spans the Cleveland-based brewery's origin story, expanded distribution, and upcoming seasonal releases.
Founded in 1988 by brothers Pat and Dan Conway, Great Lakes Brewing Co. operates from a 19th-century building in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. The brewery distributes across 17 to 18 states and brews approximately 100,000 barrels annually while remaining family-owned and independent. Williams, who has been with the company for 13 years, holds the Advanced Cicerone certification and oversees brand training and the brewery's sampling program.

"We're still independent, family-owned — still owned by Pat and Dan, which is part of what we love about working here," said Williams. "We brew 100,000 barrels of beer a year, but we're a small business. We grind every day to make high-quality beer with relatively limited resources."
Among the brewery's most notable products is its Christmas Ale, a 7.5% amber ale spiced with honey, cinnamon, and ginger. Despite being sold for only roughly 10 weeks each year, Williams confirmed it consistently ranks as the brewery's highest-volume beer and is recognized by consumers across its entire distribution footprint.
The interview also highlights Great Lakes' expansion into the Florida market, launched during the 2024 holiday season, and the rollout of its Irish Party Pack — a 12-can mixed variety featuring Conway's Irish Ale, Conway's Irish Stout, and an Irish Lager. Williams noted that additional seasonal variety packs are planned for summer, fall, and the holiday season, each containing at least one limited-time beer.

"Leaning further into our strength as a seasonal brewer — that's one of the big things for us this year at Great Lakes," Williams said.
The brewery's pub offers guided tours, including four samples and an exclusive pint glass. Williams also addressed broader craft beer industry trends, noting that while overall volume has dipped slightly, he believes doom-and-gloom reporting overstates the decline — and that Great Lakes is already exploring THC-infused beverages and other alternative products through its off-site canning facility.
