Mesa to Honor Volunteer Efforts and Just Serve Award Recipients as part of National Volunteer Week

~ Mesa, AZ - The City of Mesa is gearing up to celebrate its dedicated volunteers and their invaluable contributions with a week-long series of appreciation activities. The festivities will culminate in a special volunteer appreciation movie night on Friday, April 24.

According to Katie Pollak, the Citywide Volunteer Program Coordinator, Mesa has a strong tradition of volunteerism that is deeply ingrained in its residents. "Our residents selflessly give their time and energy through various programs, events, and service projects across the city," she said. "These efforts not only bring people together but also make Mesa a stronger and more connected community."

In 2025 alone, City of Mesa volunteers contributed an impressive 113,421 hours of service, saving the city an estimated $3,798,469. As a JustServe City, Mesa is proud to honor two exceptional volunteers with the JustServe Hero Award. This prestigious award recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to service and make a significant impact in their community.

This year's recipients are Jacky Hunt-Broersma and Edwin Broersma for their outstanding work with the Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Department's adaptive programs. Natalia Thompson Revoner, Recreation Specialist with Mesa Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities praised the duo for their unwavering dedication over the past two years. "Jacky and Edwin have become an integral part of our adaptive community," she said. "As coaches in our track and field and pickleball Special Olympics programs, they consistently show patience, adaptability and genuine care for each athlete's experience."

The awards will be presented at the ASU MIX Center in Downtown Mesa on Friday at 6:00 p.m., where Mayor Freeman will also issue a proclamation in honor of National Volunteer Week.
