Maryland: Cost-Share Grants for Spring Manure Transport and Injection Available
Rezul News/10728887
ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 3, 2026) ~ ANNAPOLIS, MD (March 3, 2026) - The Maryland Department of Agriculture is offering cost-share grants to assist farmers with the transportation and injection of manure this spring. These grants aim to help cover the costs associated with transporting certain types of manure to crop fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels and injecting liquid manure into the soil to prevent nutrient runoff and reduce odors.
Farmers who plan to transport manure this spring and summer are reminded that all projects must be completed by September 9, 2026. Claims for payment should be submitted to the department's Conservation Grants Office by October 9, 2026.
For those planning to transport poultry manure, it is important to visit the department's website for any Control Orders from the Maryland Secretary of Agriculture regarding safe handling, storage, and transport practices. These measures are in place to mitigate the risk of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI).
The cost-share program offers several options for farmers looking to transport manure. For poultry manure, eligible farmers can receive up to $28 per ton when transporting it to qualifying fields with acceptable soil phosphorus levels or alternative use projects that can safely utilize the product. For dairy and livestock manure, cost-share funding of up to 87.5% of eligible costs is available when transporting it to qualifying fields.

Both FastTrack and standard transport options are available for both poultry and dairy/livestock manure. Under FastTrack, farmers can haul now and apply later by downloading the application from the department's website. For those who do not qualify for FastTrack, they can contact their local soil conservation district for assistance in applying for standard grants. It is important to note that pre-approval is required before any manure is transported or injected.
The Department's Conservation Grants Program also offers grants specifically for manure injection. Farmers can receive up to $45 per acre for costs associated with injecting liquid manure into the soil. However, it is important to note that poultry manure is not eligible for this option due to its low moisture content.
To be eligible for these grants, farmers must be in good standing with the program and in compliance with Maryland's nutrient management regulations. For those in need of assistance in finding poultry manure, they can contact a poultry manure broker or a spreading service for help.
For more information on these cost-share grants and how to apply, farmers can contact the Manure Management Program at 410-841-5864. The Maryland Department of Agriculture is committed to supporting farmers and promoting sustainable practices in the state's agricultural industry.
